“Vampires don’t die, unless they want to.” I am confused –ah explain! “I don’t understand how can they choose to die?”
“The only thing that wounds us is wood. A dagger or a bullet causes us mild discomfort. But the only thing that can kill a vampire is a stake through the heart. We can walk around in the sunlight, but the warmth of the sun is very … uncomfortable for us. Everything that you feel as a human is intensified when you become a vampire. So if you’re passionate about animals or religion, then once you’re a vampire, those passions will multiply. You will feel things that you haven’t before, and the things that you were so sure you wanted as a human, may be completely different as a vampire. If you really want this, then you need to accept all of the facts. I won’t turn you; if you have the slightest doubt then you need to tell me, now.” He is so intense, I stare at him and my lips part, and I know my answer.
“I have no doubts, now turn me!” Nicholas exhales and he reaches out his arm. He bites into his skin and a sea of blood rushes from his wrist. He holds his hand close to my mouth and he urges me to drink. My face flushes hot and the ick factor is slowly taking over my body. The sight of his blood is repulsive, but I know it’s the only way. I part my lips and I pull his hand closer to my mouth. I place my lips onto his cold skin and I adjust them so that I can feel his blood against my lips. I open my mouth and taste his blood; it’s salty and sweet at the same time. I taste a few drops and then I pull back, but Nicholas grabs my head, forcing me to drink more.
“Keep drinking,” he urges me. I close my eyes and I gently suck harder on his skin. My mouth fills with blood and then it travels down my throat. Nicholas laughs and then he pulls his wrist away from me. The taste is now amazing and I don’t want to stop. I pull his hand back and I drink for another few seconds. Nicholas is laughing at my actions and then he forcefully pulls his wrist away from me. “You were draining me, little lady!” I feel incredible; it’s as if I am on cloud nine. His blood is the ultimate high. Nicholas pushes me down onto the sofa and he urges me rest for a few moments. I do as he says and I rest my head against the soft cushions. Nicholas jumps from the sofa and he flies over to the liquor cabinet. He pours himself a scotch and then he slowly walks back over in my direction. He downs the drink and then he positions himself behind the sofa. I feel his hands on my head and I close my eyes as he runs his fingers through my hair. He pats my head and then his hands move onto my neck, he sighs and leans in towards me, clasping my neck in a tight manner. I can feel his breath blowing against my ear and then I hear his soothing and terrifying words. “I’m going to kill you now. It will hurt, just for a second, but when you wake up; you will never feel pain again.” My heart pounds and I am scared –he is going to kill me. I close my eyes and I brace myself. But a loud noise erupts through the house, and when I hear the voice that fills the whole house, I panic and urge Nicholas to hurry up.
“It’s Dalton, hurry he won’t let me change,” I plead. Nicholas hisses and he grips my neck, tighter, this is it. His hands are squeezing my neck and just as he is about to snap, I see Dalton running towards me. His eyes are blood red and his lips are trembling. His whole body is shaking as he marches over to me.
“Rose,” Dalton shouts. Nicolas’s hands are now crushing me and as he breaks my neck, the last words that I hear are his.
“I’m doing this for you, brother!” My neck snaps and I fall against the sofa –I’m dead, but my mind is still rushing –how can this be. I can’t move, I am paralyzed and dead, but my head is working overtime. Images of my childhood are flashing in my head. I can see my parents and they are smiling at me. It’s so strange; it’s as if I am watching a movie of my life. I can see everyone, Uncle George, Jen, Rachel and all of my friends. My time at school is replaying for me, first grade, prom, science class when Mr Bates made us dissect a frog. Everything is rushing back to me, memories that I never knew I had. My first kiss with Ryan, the feeling and the awkwardness is there for me to see. My first meeting with Dalton, how he made me feel and my first kiss with him, my mind is on repeat and my memories are spectacular. I don’t want this to end, and I bask in my inner thoughts, as I lie frozen on the sofa. I can faintly hear voices, they seem far away and it’s hard for me to focus on what they are saying. I focus my ears and then I recognize its Dalton’s voice that I hear. His voice is loud and urgent as he comes closer. I can’t feel my body, so I don’t know if he is touching me, but in my head he is. As his voice urges me to wake up, I hear the words that I have been longing to hear him say.
“I … love … you,” his words are shaky and vulnerable; I wish that I could see him. I want to scream out that I love him too, but my lips are sealed shut. My mind is reminding me about our time together, his lips and icy touch dominate my thoughts. I remember how much I have wanted him to say those words, and now that he has, I am certain that I have made the right choice.
